Honourable Mention: Grace Kingston – Mossy #7
In 2019 Arts Mildura offered their first small sculpture prize. With the theme of ‘now’, artists contributed works that spoke to our current existence and state of the world. Open to interpretation, each artist, in their own way contributed to an exhibition aiming to be a snapshot of our contemporary experience.
Artist Statement:
Mossys are intended as a small, stylised imitation of life. Each artwork consists of: a photograph of the natural landscape of Clovelly Beach printed on satin fabric, hand embroidery, stuffing, and a field recording of the area with the artists breath included in the soundscape that can be activated by squeezing the soft sculpture. Mossys are cute and uncanny, their sounds and method of activation reminds the viewer of listening to a seashell or interacting with a doll as a child. These Instagram-made-tangible objects are intimate simulations, and are more than at home in our current environment of ‘post-truth’ news feeds.
This work was presented at Mildura Arts Centre, Victoria during August 2019
