Non-urban Decay is a short experimental animation VR experience that comments on digital attempts to re-create ‘natural’ feeling environments in online social spaces. The environments featured in the work are both fictitious, but are generated by different processes, one scene is created with game assets, and one with real environmental elements documented from different parts of NSW including the Botanic Gardens, Hyde Park and Mount Canobolas. Both the ‘natural’ and the game scenes decay at the same rate revealing themselves to be based on the same foundations.
This work sees a departure from my previous work that has generally been more ‘hands on’ using traditional art media, for this project I wanted to learn more digital new tricks for my practice. To complete the work, I used photogrammetry techniques to create assets in Agisoft Photoscan and had my first introduction to using Unity to create a digital environment. With extensive assistance throughout the entire process from Games academic Geoff Hill, I was able to create my first Virtual Reality scene. In addition I am grateful for the kind assistance I have received from Audio academic Chris Hancock, all audio assets of this work have been created and sourced by him.
This work was created for and exhibited at the 2018 ‘New Tricks’ group exhibition at Tortuga Studios, St Peters.
