M A N I C explores the tenuous and personal relationships between creativity, productivity and mental wellbeing. The exhibition has engaged emerging artists, writers and creatives to amplify discussion around mental ill health through lived experience. Curated by Ivana Jovanovic.
Artist Statement: ‘What are you doing next? (I’ve already done enough)’
‘What are you doing next? (I’ve already done enough)’ is a life-sized installation of the artist rolling in bed while looking at her iphone, projected on the floor of the gallery, potentially over a white doona to give the illusion of a real body. Over three to four minutes the artists body is slowly replaced by sped macro footage of moss growing. The work considers the pressure artists feel to keep producing even when burnt out, while also playfully referencing the ‘lie down in the woods and let the moss reclaim you’ meme from Obvious Plant. This familiar paralysed-in-bed-with-phone scene is sure to strike a chord with all creatives suffering with anxiety, depression, and the nagging feeling of never quite being enough. This work was developed especially for the Manic exhibition for the Big Anxiety Festival.
This work was presented at AD Space, UNSW Art & Design during October 2019
