For the September exhibition at Home gallery, I created a series of Mossys a little closer to home then the Finnish one’s seen in ‘Deep Solitude’. These new works are based on photographs and sound recordings taken at Clovelly Beach, Sydney. This series is printed on satin and has hand embroidered details on each, they also feature a more advanced sound component allowing for easier interactivity with the viewer.
I also created a small hand book to document the location of each photograph and recording
Clovelly Mossys: A Field Guide
“These pieces are intended as a small, stylised imitation of life as seen by the artist – Grace Kingston. Each artwork consists of: a photograph of the natural landscape featured in the specified area printed on satin fabric, hand embroidery in polyester blend thread, polyester stuffing, and a field recording of the area with the artists breath/sigh included in the general land soundscape (acting as the ‘hand’ of the artist depicting said landscape) that can be activated by squeezing the soft sculpture.
Like a well-curated Social Media feed, each object’s physical and audial representation purports to be photorealistic and objectively authentic, yet each are heavily edited and compromised by technological and curatorial intervention of the author/artist. Mossys are both cute and uncanny, their sounds and method of activation is meant to remind the viewer of listening to a seashell or interacting with a doll as a child. These Instagram-made-tangible objects are intimate simulations, and are more then at home in our current environment of ‘post-truth’ news feeds.”
This work was presented at Home @735 Gallery, Surry Hills between September and October 2017
